Quarry and haul road

The quarry wants to work deeper and for longer hours. The planning condition sets a limit at the nearest dwelling, and the neighbours have objected.

Does the pit rim screen enough on its own, or is the haul ramp climbing out of the void the thing that governs?

What the model settles

The face and crusher sit below the rim and are screened hard. The ramp is not - it rises into open view, and it sets the level at the property. So the money goes into a bund along the ramp, not into quieter plant in the pit.

Major road past housing

Housing is proposed alongside an existing freeway. The developer needs to know which facades fail before the layout is fixed, not after.

Which facades exceed the limit, and how high does a barrier have to be - and where along the path - to bring them back?

What the model settles

A barrier works by geometry. The model shows the height and position that break the line of sight to the failing facades, and shows the rows where a barrier buys almost nothing because the front blocks already screen them.

Industrial estate at night

A factory in the export zone wants a night shift. Its fixed plant would run 22:00 to 06:00, when the limit is tightest and the background is lowest.

Does the rating level exceed the measured background by enough to indicate an adverse impact - and which unit is responsible?

What the model settles

The model ranks the plant by contribution and applies the BS 4142 character corrections. Usually one tonal item carries the rating, so one attenuator settles it instead of treating the whole yard.

Construction site, daytime

A contractor is programming a breaking and piling phase with occupied buildings across the road. The client wants the shortest programme that will not draw a stop notice.

How many hours a day can the plant run before the daytime limit is breached, and does moving it further back beat putting up a hoarding?

What the model settles

Running time is the strongest lever on a construction assessment - the same breaker rates 6 dB lower if it runs a quarter of the period. The model prices hours against distance against screening, so the programme is chosen rather than guessed.

Grain mill in a settlement

A diesel posho mill has dwellings on every side and the neighbours have complained. The owner needs to keep milling.

Is the complaint driven by the level, or by the tone and the hours - and would a shed wall fix it?

What the model settles

The neighbours are close, so the surrounding buildings already screen a good deal. What the rating turns on is character and timing, which means a wall on one side and a change of hours can work where a quieter engine would not.

Boulevard traffic at block facades

Flats on a busy boulevard are being brought up to an internal noise target. Reglazing the whole block is expensive and mostly unnecessary.

Which facades and which floors actually exceed the target, so the glazing specification goes only where it is needed?

What the model settles

A receiver is a position, not a building. The same flat reads differently at ground floor and third floor, and a facade position carries +3 dB that a free-field one does not. The model turns one blanket spec into a floor-by-floor schedule.
